On October 7th and 8th we took approximately 15 Graduating Seniors from Alvarado High School and Venus High School to the Riverbend Retreat Center in Glen Rose Tx. This was an opportunity for our Seniors to fill out college applications, attend several presentations which covered information such as: financial aid, study abroad programs, and college resources.
When we arrived, our students were able to settle into their bunks and then we dove head first into the information. The first session was presented by our Upward Bound Math and Science Director, James Jesse. This session covered General College Information which encompassed information about Colleges out there, College Resources available, and how to pick the College that is the best fit.
After lunch, we had a goal setting workshop. We worked with the students to set short term, long term, and education goals. We also presented them with strategies to achieve their own personal goals. The next session was called "Get it done." This workshop involved the students utilizing ApplyTexas.com, starting their FAFSA's and they worked on Scholarship Essays.
Next on our agenda was.... FUN! We went to the Rec Yard, where the students were able to play volleyball, rock climb, play archery tag, gaga ball, and more with the Upward Bound Staff.
The next workshop covered "How to Get involved in School." This workshop covered Greek Life, Study Abroad Programs, and Student Support Service Programs. From there, we broke into small groups where the students were able to talk about their fears, and worries about college to our Staff who shared their experiences and were able to ease some of those.
We ended the first night with a BONFIRE!
Day two we Ziplined through the trees!
